Public Speaking Script
Holidays
Good morning to the panel
of honourable adjudicators, teachers, and friends. On this fine morning, I would like to talk about Malaysian
Holidays. Our country of Malaysia is the home of people of different
cultures and ethnic groups. Themajority of Malaysians are Malays. Besides
Malays, there are Chinese, Indians, and so on.We live
here, Malaysia, peacefully without wars amongst ourselves. There had been
some disturbing talk some time ago about the necessity to do somethingabout
Malaysia having too many holidays. I say ‘disturbing’ because who has
heard of having ‘too many holidays’? We’ve got along all these years
celebrating every festival that ison the calendar and still managing to keep up
with the work that has to be done.To students, a public holiday means
having fun and relaxing. We students will get tired of school if
holidays didn’t exist. Spending our time on a holiday also means we could
spendsome time with our family. A five-day school week gives us less time
to hang around with our families. During the weekends, our time
is usually spent in shopping malls with either our family or buddies. On Hari Raya, Malay kids
would be elated to have ‘duit raya’. My past years of going aroundthe
village have passed, leaving good memories such as being chased by a
goat with mycousins. When I turned ten, I felt awkward being
around little kids while collecting the ‘duitraya’. This year I spent
my time at my grandparent’s house with my siblings and my12years+ cousins.
I felt bored, having the urge to go back home and listen to head-bangingmusic.
These days, teens as well as preteens don’t have the spirit of a
get-together. To me,it’s déjà vu every year.Even though the spirit
of togetherness is being overshadowed by the stress of a
teenager’slife, we still somehow find a way to make holidays with our
families interesting. For example;we try not to talk back on our parent’s
opinion to go to an island somewhere in Borneo. While we’re there, we have
fun snorkelling and appreciating the wonders of the marineworld. And
I thought I was going to swim with the lionfish!Holidays should be spent
with reasonable activities. Some parents send us to camps duringthe school
holidays. We dread of going to camps. I had the experience when I was
11. “Isigned you up to a camp in Rawang. It’s a four day study camp,”
said my dad. I was like, “What?! I’m so not going there!” I was full
with anger and fury. My diary read – I can’t believethis is happening! -
Well, who likes to go to camps when their parents say so? I saw this
pollin the internet and it said 73% of people rather stay at home without
TV than go to camp. Soit’s true that students don’t like being forced away
to camps during the holidays. The Chinese celebrate a lot of festivals. There is
a list of the celebrations, but I’m going totalk about two only. I’m not
sure what they celebrate on the Moon cake festival, but what Iknow is that
there are loads of moon cakes. Yum! The most obvious and marking the
firstday of the New Year of the Chinese calendar, is Chinese New Year.
Lion dance andparades are held, full of excitement. The quietest of all the
festivals known to my brain, Deepavali. I’m not the whiz of the detailsof
the festivals in this country. The
kalam
is a decoration they make out coloured rice. Theother thing that I
know is they eat murukku. A delicious, country treat.
Of all the holidays in
Malaysia, there is one celebration that most of the citizens watch or attend.
‘Merdeka’ is the word that people cheer to at the stroke of midnight of 31
st
August of every year.
Celebrated at landmarks such as Dataran Merdeka, and many more in theWilayah
Persekutuan. Thanks are the word I would like to say, for sharing
your time with me on this wonderful day

The 1993 amendments removed the legal immunity of the Sultan and royalty,
*Will Mahathir further
weaken the powers of Malay Sultans?*
Malay rulers in
Malaysia are getting worried. This came after the revelation
that every month
the government has to
spend RM16 million
maintaining the lifestyle of the Agong. Malaysia has
9 Sultans altogether. The
total expenses to
maintain them is
unknown.
The Sultans of
Malaysia used to have judicial immunity. They could do no wrong.
They were
above the laws. In 1993,
Mahathir had enough of it so he began allowing
the publication of reports
about the misdoings of the royals
(some royals actually
murder and beat people as they like, some locked up
police officers who
offended them in their
palace and tortured
them) and also their lavish lifestyle. This led to public backlash
and Mahathir
took the opportunities
to press through the
1993 amendments to the Constitution of Malaysia.
The 1993 amendments
removed the legal immunity of the Sultan and royalty,
making Malaysia more
in-line to other
constitutional
monarchies like the UK or Japan. It greatly weakened the powers
of Malaysian
Sultans. The amendments
also makes it no longer an offense to
criticize the royalty except to areas pertaining
to their legitimate existence.
Before, the Agong and
rulers can outright veto a parliamentary vote, holding the
government hostage,
but after the
amendments the rulers
can no longer veto, only delay any legislation passed in
the parliament for a
maximum sixty days,
provided that the delays
were given reasons. This would change to only 30 days in 1994.
133 out of
180 MPs voted in
favor of the changes, and with it Mahathir
successfully curbed the powers of the rulers.
The Sultans hated this
of course. They opposed such amendments. Mahathir's
government then threatened
to withdraw
their privileges and
continued publication of their royal excesses and their
extravagant lifestyles,
even hinting a possibility of
ending constitutional
monarchy in Malaysia. Eventually they compromised, but
their grudge against
Mahathir remains.
The Sultan of Negeri
Sembilan became the first ruler to lost a court case. He borrowed
money from a
bank but refused to pay.
The court ordered him to settle the US$1 million
in debts he had owed to the bank.
This prompted his son to advocate the
restoration of rulers'
immunity during Najib's reign.
Najib was a weak
leader. The powers of the Sultans increased during his governance
and they
began to occasionally
interfere in political
matters. In attempts to win their support Najib granted contracts
to
royal-linked companies, kickbacks
and a lot of other
favors. This enriched the royalty further.
When Mahathir
announced that he would be a PM candidate last year, the rulers,
still grudging
over him stripping their
powers back then,
jointly attacked him. Kelantan Sultan revoked his royal awards.
Selangor Sultan
said he got inferiority
complex. Johor royals
urge voters not to vote Mahathir for stability. Crown prince of
Johor even said
the state of Johor
will never forget that
person who diminished the power of Sultans back then. Mahathir
responded by
returning the royal
awards he had
received. In an interview he said, "If the sultan doesn't like me, it's
alright.
I am not asking people to like me,
I am just going to stand up for what is
right."
And he won the
election. The Agong and rulers responded by purposely delaying his
swearing in
as PM and the appointment
of the Attorney General he appointed. There
are now rumors that Mahathir wants to
reverse all the royal gains during
Najib era and may even
further clip their powers. He wants them, as constitutional
monarchs, to remain
only as symbolic
figures (just like UK
Queen Elizabeth II or Japan Emperor Akihito) and not interfere into
political
affairs. Then suddenly
publications on royal
excesses began to surface again, leading to outrage among
Malaysians on the
royalty.
Sultan of Selangor is
the first to complain about this, asking people to stop their slanders
and
instigation of hatred against
the rulers. Mahathir
responded that he is not against Malay Sultans, but to build Malaysia
as a
nation with rule of laws like
that of developed countries, even the Sultans
must abide by the laws and the constitution.

Taksub Ashaari
Muhammad vs Taksub Mahathir Mohammad
By Dean Kadeer
"geng aku
saja yang maha betul,
maha benar,maha suci
dan mustahil salah"
Di seluruh pelusuk
dunia wujud golongan pentaksub.Sejarah menyaksikan,manusia
yg kejam spt Adolf
Hitler mampu
mengajak jutaan
rakyatnya membina ketumbukan tentera dan bersama-sama dgn
beliau menghancurkan
dunia. Kita
menggelarkannya
syaitan, tetapi beliau mampu menarik berjuta-juta rakyat menjadi
pengkagum
kepada "perjuangan dan
idea hebat"
beliau.Formulanya apa? Taksub
Diktator spt
Saddam,Bashar Al Assad,Gaddafi malah Ferdinand Marcos bersama
isterinya Imelda
si pemboros itupun
ada ramai pentaksub
dan pengikutnya.Jgn terkejut mengetahui Imelda yg menjarah
harta negara,yg
dihalau oleh rakyat
Filipin, yg mempunyai
menang sbg wakil
rakyat.Puncanya
apa?Taksub.
ISIS atau ISIL juga
kejam.Tetapi dengan ideologi syurga,mati syahid,kekhalifahan,
empayar agung
Islam dan negara
tuhan,maka beratus
ribu manusia sanggup keluar "berjihad" bersama ISIS.Mereka
sanggup
pemimpin
mereka.Formulanya apa? Taksub.
Kita tentu hairan,knp
Jawapannya mudah : Taksub.
Di negara kita banyak
juga contohnya.Pada suatu masa dahulu, ada seorang
pemimpin politik kerajaan di
tahan di
lapangan terbang
Australia kerana membawa wang tunai berjumlah RM22 juta.
Beliau di bawa ke
mahkamah Australia,
dan di dapati bersalah
kerana tidak mengisytiharkan wang tunai kpd Imigresen.
Pembangkang menuduh itu
adalah duit
rasuah atau duit yg diselewengkan,tetapi
penyokong beliau bermati-matian
menafikannya.Puncanya apa? Sudah tentu
taksub.
Pada dekad yang
lampau, ada seorang tokoh yg mengepalai sebuah kumpulan
agama yg dinamakan Al
Arqam.Nama
tokoh tersebut ialah
Ashaari Muhammad.Bermula dengan sebuah gerakan kecil
yg berkumpul untuk
melakukan dakwah
dan usrah, akhirnya menjadi sebuah kumpulan
besar yg begitu berpengaruh dan
mempunyai ratusan ribu pengikut.
Bagaimana beliau mampu
menarik sebegitu ramai manusia menyertai kumpulan
beliau?Formulanya
mudah.Taksub.
dianggap mempunyai
martabat yg
tinggi.Pengikutnya begitu taksub dgn beliau.Apa saja cakap beliau
dipatuhi dan
akhirnya beliau di angkat
spt dewa.Wajahnya
terpampang dimerata-rata tempat,buku-buku tulisannya dipenuhi
dgn gambar2
beliau.Boleh
dikatakan,hidup mati
kumpulan Al Arqam itu adalah kerana beliau.
Akhirnya kumpulan
tersebut dimusnahkan kerajaan kerana mengikut maklumat
yg penulis dengar,
mereka ini telah
bercadang utk
mengambil bahagian dlm politik Msia dan bertanding sbg satu parti
politik.Lalu
Ashaari yg telah
mempunyai pengaruh yg
taksub dgn tokoh-tokoh tertentu seperti
ulama lampau atau ulama kontemporari.
Sekali pandang,mereka
yg taksub ini dilihat seolah-olah seperti seekor lembu yg dicocok
hidung.Apa
saja kata2 yg
keluar dari mulut
tokoh-tokoh pujaan mereka dianggap sangat betul dan tepat semuanya.
Pandangan
itu haram di
perleceh,disanggah
atau diperdebatkan.Jika ada pihak lain yang memberi pendapat
berbeza dengan
pendapat tokoh
berakhir dgn
kata-kata nista
bersandarkan emosi kerana akal sudah tidak
lagi berfungsi.Inilah kemudaratan berkiblatkan
sikap taksub.Isu tidak lagi
penting kerana
ketaksuban memadamkan lojik dan fakta.
Banyak contoh boleh
dilihat disekeliling kita. Tokoh agama yg pandai melawak seperti
Ustaz Azhar
Idrus atau
Ustaz Kazim Elias
mempunyai ramai pentaksub tegar.Tokoh2 ini mampu menarik peminat
dan pentaksub
mereka
untuk datang dari jauh
semata-mata utk mendengar ceramah mereka walaupun isinya
tidaklah seberapa.
Cuba anda kritik
kemudiannya.Anda
juga boleh cuba
mengkritik tokoh-tokoh
ini didepan pentaksub mereka dan tunggulah akibatnya.Inilah
sikap
pentaksub.Mereka sangat
"defensive".Semua kritikan kpd tokoh
yg mereka taksubkan dianggap berniat jahat dan
tidak perlu didengar.
Apabila tumbangnya
rejim kerajaan lama yg mewarisi semua elemen-elemen jahiliah,
seharusnya sikap
taksub sebegini
dibuang jauh-jauh.Kerana inilah amalan
jahiliah yg berlarutan selama 60 tahun.Inilah
sikap yg merugikan negara.Amalan
inilah yg melahirkan
rejim bongkak yg terpalit dgn beribu-ribu skandal penyelewengan dan
pemborosan.Terapi apa yang
berlaku adalah
sebaliknya.Hanya kerajaan yang berubah tetapi anjakan
paradigma tidak berlaku.
Dalam kemelut mencorak
dan mengisi kemerdekaan kedua, wujud ketaksuban
baru kepada seorang perdana
menteri
yg dilihat telah
"menyelamatkan negara".(SELAMATKAH?)
Rakyat tiba-tiba obses
media sosial. Gambarnya
dijadikan
sepanduk gergasi dan
di tayangkan di bangunan-bangunan tinggi. Iklan memuja-muja
beliau dimainkan
saban hari
,kata-katanya dianggap
paling hebat, paling betul dan paling berhikmah.
Rakyat pula asyik
menceritakan "KEHEBATAN" beliau seolah-olah beliau selama ini
tidak pernah melakukan sebarang
kesilapan dan tidak
pernah mempunyai dosa atau sebarang kelemahan langsung.
Lalu
berlumba-lumba lah rakyat
mencetak gambarnya di
baju,rantai kunci,stiker kereta dan bermacam-macam lagi.
Akhirnya keadaan
tersebut mencapai
klimak apabila rakyat
mencalonkan nama beliau untuk menerima anugerah Nobel.
Puncanya apa?Sudah tentu
taksub.
Nah,ketaksuban telah
berpindah tangan.Dahulunya pentaksub tokoh atau kumpulan
agama dipandang keji
dan dihina
seperti lembu yg
dicocok hidung.Skrg rakyat Malaysia berbangga pula mendukung
ideologi
"taksub perdana menteri".
Mereka hanya buat-buat
muka sardin apabila baju pentaksub dipakaikan ditubuh
mereka.Seolah-olah
ideologi taksub
itu dibenarkan pula.
Asal tujuan
meraikan
kebebasan bersuara,mengkritik
dan berbeza
pandangan.Tetapi apabila TAKSUB menguasai pemikiran,yg terjadi
adalah
sebaliknya.
Rakyat yg mengkritik
perdana menteri baru dituduh sbg pencacai pihak lawan,
dengki dgn
kemenangan,suka menyalak
dan pelbagai lagi
tuduhan-tuduhan yg bersifat "offensive" dan anti demokrasi.Inikah
cara masyarakat Msia Baru mengisi
perubahan dan
kemerdekaan kedua?
Apa saja kritikan kpd
berkuasa selama 22
tahun dan
anak beranak, ipar duai dan kroninya menjadi
jutawan besar sepanjang pemerintahan
kuku besinya.
Taksub tidak pernah
membawa kebaikan dalam sistem sosial manusia.Apatah lagi
taksub kepada ahli
politik yg
kuasanya diberi
oleh rakyat.Dalam politik,hanya taksub kepada
kebenaran,
ketelusan,pertanggungjawaban dan
kecekapan sahaja yang
dibenarkan.
sentiasa berada
dipihak rakyat,bukan bertegang urat sesama
rakyat semata-mata mempertahankan
tokoh yg ditaksubkan walaupun
jelas tokoh tersebut bersalah.
Sepatutnya apabila
inilah masanya
"penyokong
kerajaan baru"
mengajar "penyokong kerajaan lama" bagaimana berpolitik cara
sihat
dan bertamadun.Penyokong
kerajaan baru harus
menunjukkan kpd penyokong kerajaan lama bagaimana
politik baru yg segar
dijalankan iaitu
kerajaan dikritik oleh
penyokong sendiri, tidak sebagaimana amalan kerajaan lama
iaitu kerajaan
dikritik oleh golongan
pembangkang sahaja.
Tetapi yg berlaku
adalah sebaliknya.Mereka hanya bertukar baju dan "copy paste"
kaedah
penyokong kerajaan lama
iaitu "menghina
musuh" dan taksub dengan pimpinan sendiri.Mereka hanya
mengulang-ulang
amalan politik kultus
jahiliah yang
merugikan negara.Rakyat yang tidak sehaluan dianggap warga
kelas kedua dan
tidak layak dilayan
seperti warganegara yg
berhak bersuara.
INIKAH MALAYSIA BARU?
